Who is Carmen Lomas Garza?
Carmen Lomas Garza is a Mexican-American artist who grew up in a bilingual, bicultural home in Kingsville, Texas. Her paintings and drawings capture everyday life in South Texas, filled with family, traditions, and daily routines like cooking tamales or celebrating with loved ones.
Carmen often works in gouache or creates cut-paper art called papel picado. Her goal has always been to honor Mexican-American culture and show the beauty in family life. Her art is often shared in classrooms to build cultural awareness, and her bilingual book Family Pictures/Cuadros de Familia remains one of her most loved works.
